At Chess for Children, we do not simply teach children to memorize moves. We teach them to observe, reason, plan, and make decisions. Mr. C adapts each lesson to the child's age, experience, interests, and pace of learning.
“Thinking beats everything.”
The Four Parts of Your Child's Program
A Personal Chess Assessment
Every child begins with an individual assessment conducted by Mr. C. We evaluate chess knowledge, concentration, problem-solving, board vision, and the ability to think independently. From this assessment, we create a personalized learning plan designed around the child's strengths, needs, and goals.
A Private Student Learning Record
Each child receives an individual learning record in Mr. C's Chess Laboratory. This helps us organize lessons, record progress, save important chess positions, assign homework, and identify areas needing improvement. Parents can receive updates about what their child is learning.
Student records are private, not public. Student and parent access to additional features will be introduced as they become available.
Direct Access to Mr. C
Your child works directly with National Chess Master Ernest Colding during scheduled private lessons. Mr. C teaches students to explain their decisions, recognize mistakes, and discover stronger moves. Every lesson is a conversation designed to develop independent thinking—not simply a demonstration of chess moves.
Books & Exclusive Online Activities
Students receive access to selected Chess for Children educational materials and age-appropriate interactive activities. These include checkmate exercises, chessboard vision training, tactical puzzles, annotated games, and practice assignments. Activities are selected to reinforce each student's individual lessons.
Resources are assigned according to each student's level and current availability.
What Your Child Will Learn
Beginners
Piece movement, board vision, basic checkmates, chess safety, and developing good thinking habits. Children learn to look carefully, ask questions, and understand why a move is good.
Intermediate Players
Tactics, calculation, essential endgames, planning, and analyzing mistakes. Students practice recognizing threats and choosing moves for a reason.
Advanced Players
Deep calculation, strategic understanding, advanced endgames, annotated game analysis, and individualized tournament preparation.

Some features are still being developed or introduced gradually. Mr. C will explain which resources are currently available to your child.
Learning Continues After the Lesson
